ALM Octane lifecycle

ALM Octane lifecycle can include the stages described below. ALM Octane is flexible: perform any stage at any point.

Manage the backlog and track release quality

  • Create the release backlog

For each release, organize epics, features, and stories into a tree: the backlog tree. Stories can be user stories, quality stories, or defects.

  • Create tests for each user story

Design manual tests for testing release quality, such as functional, sanity, acceptance, security, and performance tests.

Integrate with a CI server to collect the results of your automated tests and add them to ALM Octane. Assign tests to specific backlog items.

  • Run tests

Run the tests manually or run your CI server pipelines. Results are automatically incorporated into the dashboard.

  • Create defects

Report defects for user stories developed for your application.

  • Analyze

Use the dashboard to track release quality.

For details, see Backlog management and release quality.

Track build quality

  • Connect to a CI server

To track build quality and to collect automated test run results, administrators must first set up a connection to a CI server.

  • Create pipelines

Integrate with a supported CI server to reflect its pipelines in ALM Octane. When the pipelines run, ALM Octane collects automated test run results that can be used to analyze build, release, and product quality. You can also view the CI server's pipeline steps graphically and trigger pipeline runs. For details, see Add a pipeline in ALM Octane.

  • Label and configure pipeline steps

Label the CI server's pipelines steps as different types of jobs (build jobs, compile jobs, test jobs, and so on) and configure them for different environments and test detail. For details, see Label and configure pipeline steps (Topology tab).

  • Analyze

Use the pipeline display to see the general status of each step in the pipeline flow, and of the automated tests run by the pipeline.

For details, see Pipelines: Integrate with your CI server.

Incorporate automated test run results into overall product quality

After a release goes out, integrate the testing of individual features into the testing for the overall product. In the release backlog, assign features and defects to application modules.

Also, incorporate automated tests into the testing for the overall product. Assign automated tests to application modules.

For details, see Assign items to application modules.

Track product quality

  • Organize the application module tree

Build an application module tree by creating nodes for areas that you consider essential components for testing the quality of the overall product.

  • Run tests

Run the tests manually or run your CI server pipelines. Results are automatically incorporated into the dashboard.

  • Create defects

Report defects for user stories developed your application.

  • Analyze

Use the dashboard to track product quality.

For details, see Product quality.

Analyze quality in context

Use the various ALM Octane dashboards, that come with many useful charts and graphs, to analyze quality in context.

For details, see Use the ALM Octane Dashboard.
